In 1975, the blockbuster film "Jaws" was released, delighting and scaring millions of moviegoers worldwide. I have been watching various Youtube videos dedicated to this iconic film over the past week -- you can check out some of them below.  Last weekend, some other therians and I were talking about the first time we saw "Jaws" on the big screen, with some of us being under 10 years old at the time! It was a crazy and fun time, and I can still remember the Jaws t-shirts that my brother and sisters often wore that summer.

Last year, I had the good fortune to attend a book presentation by author Ryan Dacko. Ryan gave a fun and insightful talk about his prequel to "Jaws." He spoke about his motivation for the book and also described how he was able to get permission from the estate of the late Peter Benchley in order to write the novel. I was impressed with the lengths he went to in order to tell his story.

The Book of Quint is a gripping prequel to Jaws, diving deep into the backstory of the iconic shark hunter. It follows Quint from his harrowing survival of the USS Indianapolis sinking in 1945 through his post-war descent into trauma, obsession, and shark hunting. Set between 1945 and 1968, the novel explores his psychological scars, his arrival at Amity Island, and his transformation into the hardened legend we meet in Jaws. It’s a tale of survivor’s guilt, justice, and the monsters—both human and aquatic—that haunt him.

You can find the Kindle edition on Amazon here.

Some Amazing and Terrifying Facts About Sharks

  1. Teeth That Never Quit: Sharks lose thousands of teeth in their lifetime, but no worries—they constantly grow new ones. Some species can shed a tooth every week, and their jaws are lined with multiple rows ready to rotate forward like a conveyor belt of doom.
  2. They Can Smell Blood from Miles Away: Sharks have an extraordinary sense of smell. Some species can detect a single drop of blood in an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Once they catch a whiff, they can track it with unnerving accuracy.
  3. They Attack Without Warning: Great whites and other ambush predators often strike from below at high speeds, sometimes breaching the water entirely. Their stealth and speed mean you often don’t see them coming until it’s too late.
  4. Some Start Hunting Before They’re Born: In certain shark species, embryos develop teeth and begin feeding on their siblings while still in the womb—a phenomenon called intrauterine cannibalism. Nature doesn’t mess around.
  5. Electroreception Superpower: Sharks can detect the faint electrical fields generated by muscle contractions in other animals—even from buried prey. This sixth sense is powered by special organs called ampullae of Lorenzini, and it’s so precise that a shark could detect the heartbeat of a fish hiding under sand.
